Math Email

Faculty, staff, grad students, and visiting academics are given a netid@math.ucsb.edu email address, once they've submitted an account request form to the Math sysadmin. Here's some information on how these addresses work.

  • These are aliases (nicknames) for your existing ucsb.edu account. All mail will go to the same inbox by default. If you'd prefer to have the mail sorted separately based on the address it's sent to, you can create a filter to label it.
    • In the search box at the top of the Gmail page, type "to:" followed by the address you want to filter, e.g. to:brodbeck@math.ucsb.edu
    • Click the dropdown arrow next to the search box, and click Create Filter
    • Set the actions to taste. Most likely you'll want "Skip the inbox" and "Apply the label...".
  • You can choose which email address you send from.
    • To temporarily change the address for one message, click on your own name on the "From" line, and choose from the drop-down list.
    • To change the default address, click the gear icon to open your account settings, click See All Settings, click on the Accounts heading, then click make default next to the address you want to use. You can also use these settings to choose which address is used when you reply, and to edit how your name appears.
      • Note: Changing your full name won't necessarily change what other people see suggested when they type your address; if they've mailed you before, they'll probably see the name that was set when they first sent a message to you.
  • When contacting me regarding your account, please use your @ucsb.edu or @math.ucsb.edu address, even if you normally forward your mail to another account. When I get messages from random @gmail.com accounts it can be hard for me to verify who is actually contacting me.
Note that assigning these aliases and editing mailing list memberships are the only email issues the Math sysadmin can help with; if you need assistance with your email account in general, you should contact UCSB Connect support.
