Mathematica Licensing

University-Owned Computers

The steps below are for people who have admin access to their machines and want to do their own installation. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, or don't have admin access, contact sysadmin@math.ucsb.edu. Note that in many cases Mathematica will be pre-installed on university-owned machines.

The Windows instructions below cover Windows 8 and later; if you need to install on Windows 7, contact sysadmin@math.ucsb.edu.

Note that these instructions pair your computer to the Math Department's license server, so the installed software will only work if you're on campus or connected to the Campus VPN. If you're installing on a laptop and intend to use Mathematica when not connected, you should follow the instructions for non university-owned computers, one section down.

Option 1: Managed Installation

  1. Open Applications and double-click Managed Software Center. If you do not have Managed Software Center under your Applications folder, use Option 2 below.
  2. Click "Software."
  3. Next to Mathematica, click "Install"
  4. Be patient while the package is downloaded and installed. This will take some time -- it's about 4 GB.
  5. Licensing should be preconfigured by the installation script, but if not see step 4 below.

Option 2: Manual installation

  1. Download the Mathematica disk image from https://ucsb.app.box.com/v/Mathematica. This is a large download (approximately 3 GB) and you may want to do it over a wired connection if you have that option.
  2. Windows: Right-click the ISO file and choose "Mount". Open the "Windows" folder inside, then double-click "setup" to run the installer.
Mac: Open the DMG file, then drag the Mathematica icon to the Applications folder to install it.
  3. Go get a cup of coffee...this is a slow installer.
  4. Run Mathematica. When it prompts you to enter a license code, click "Other Ways To Activate" at the bottom of the window.
  5. Click "Connect to a network license server".
  6. In the "Server name" box, type boole.math.ucsb.edu. Finally, click the "Activate" button at the bottom right of the window.

Non University-Owned Computers (and university-owned laptops)

Faculty, Staff, and University-Employed Graduate Students

You are covered by the UCSB site license and can install Mathematica at no additional charge; this includes home use on personal computers. Contact software@lsit.ucsb.edu. They will give you a form to fill out, after which you will be able to download the software and license key.

Undergraduates and Non-Employed Graduate Students

See the student license information on the Campus Office of Software Licensing's site.
