Windows

Tested on Windows 10.

Known issue: It is not possible to change the name of a printer installed this way. This appears to be a Windows limitation.

  1. Download and install the HP PCL 6 driver:
    1. Go to https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-enterprise-m605-series/7087291
    2. Scroll down to "Basic Drivers" and click the download link next to "HP LaserJet Enterprise M605 PCL 6 V4 Printer Driver (no installer)"
      1. Note: The "V4" portion may change as they release new driver versions. It's OK if it's a later version. The "no installer" part is important, however.
    3. Run the file you downloaded. It will ask to extract files to C:\HP_LaserJet_Enterprise_M605. Click Yes.
  2. Make sure you're connected to campus WiFi (or the campus wired network.)
  3. Click the Start button or search bar, and type "printers". Click Printers & scanners.
  4. Click Add a printer or scanner
  5. Click The printer that I want isn't listed. (This option may take several seconds to appear.)
  6. Click Select a shared printer by name
  7. Enter http://median.math.ucsb.edu:631/printer in the text box.
  8. Click Next.
  9. The Add Printer Wizard dialog will appear, asking you to select the manufacturer and model of the printer. Click Have Disk.
  10. In the Install From Disk dialog, enter C:\HP_LaserJet_Enterprise_M605 in the text box, then click OK

  11. Select "HP LaserJet M605 PCL-6" from the list, then click OK.
  12. After a short delay, you should get a message that you've successfully added the printer. Click Next
  13. Optionally print a test page if you like, then click Finish. You're done!

ChromeOS

  1. Open "Settings"
  2. Click "Advanced"
  3. Click "Print and scan"
  4. Click "Printers"
  5. Click "Add printer" (the printer icon with a + superimposed on it)
  6. Use the following settings:
    • Name: Whatever you like -- for example "Median".
    • Address: median.math.ucsb.edu
    • Protocol: Internet Printing Protocol (IPP)
    • Queue: ipp/print
  7. Click "Add"
  8. The first time you print to this printer, you'll need to click "See more" in the print destination list to see it. After that it should show up in the default list.

Linux

Ubuntu (may also work for other distributions that use the GNOME desktop)

  1. Open "Settings" and choose "Printers"
  2. Click "Add Printer"
  3. In the search field, type "median.math.ucsb.edu"
  4. Click "LPD-Printer", then click Add
  5. Click "Hewlett-Packard", "Laserjet M604 M605 M606 Postscript" and click Select.
  6. Click the gear next to the printer entry, and choose Printing Options.
  7. Click "Installable options" in the left sidebar.
  8. Check "Duplex unit" and set Tray 3 to "HP 500-Sheet Input Tray".

If you want to change the name of the printer to something more obvious:
  1. Click the gear icon, and choose "Printer Details"
  2. Edit the name to what you want (e.g., "Median"), keeping in mind that spaces are not allowed.
