Printing From Mobile Devices

Android and ChromeOS

These devices support Google Cloud Print. No special configuration is necessary, but you need to contact sysadmin@math.ucsb.edu to be added to the Math Printing group. Please include the email address of the Google account(s) you use on the device you want to print from. (This does not necessarily have to be your UCSB account.)

iOS

  • Apple's native mobile printing system, AirPrint, doesn't work with the way the campus network is segmented. Unfortunately most iOS apps only support AirPrint.
  • Some of Google's own apps, such as Docs and Sheets, support Google Cloud Print natively. If your document is in a format that one of these apps understands, this might be a good solution.
    • In Docs or Sheets: Tap the three dots, then "Share and Export," then "Print," then "Google Cloud Print"
    • In Gmail: Tap the three dots, then "Print" or "Print All," then "Google Cloud Print"
    • Chrome: You may encounter web pages that claim Google Chrome can print to Cloud Print on iOS. Unfortunately this hasn't been true since version 50.
  • There are commercial apps that will allow iPads to print arbitrary documents to Google Cloud Print. One that's frequently suggested is PrintCentral
  • You'll need to email sysadmin@math.ucsb.edu to be added to the Math Printing group. (This can be any Google account you use with your device; it doesn't necessarily have to be your UCSB account.)

Known Issues

  • Google Cloud Print shows printers as "offline" or grayed out
    • This happens any time a printer is left idle in Cloud Print for over a month. You should be able to print to the printer anyway.
    • If you're unable to print to the "offline" printer, email sysadmin@math.ucsb.edu to report the problem. Be sure to note which specific printer you're having trouble with.
